If there is one habit worth borrowing from Korean beauty routines, it is the evening double cleanse. It sounds elaborate, but it is simply two quick steps that leave your skin feeling thoroughly clean and ready for whatever comes next.
What is double cleansing?
The first step uses an oil-based cleanser to dissolve sunscreen, makeup and the day's build-up. The second uses a gentle water-based cleanser to rinse everything away. Because oil attracts oil, the first step does the heavy lifting without any harsh rubbing.
How to do it
- Start dry. Apply your cleansing oil to dry skin and massage in gentle circles for about a minute.
- Add a little water. The oil should turn milky. Massage for a few more seconds.
- Rinse well with lukewarm water.
- Follow with a gentle cleanser if you wear makeup or sunscreen, then pat dry with a clean towel.
Do you need to do it every night?
Not necessarily. If you have worn sunscreen or makeup, a double cleanse makes sense. On bare-skin days, a single gentle cleanse may be plenty. Listen to how your skin feels.
Keep it gentle
Avoid very hot water and aggressive scrubbing. If your skin feels tight or uncomfortable afterwards, simplify your routine.
Clean skin is a lovely blank canvas for the rest of your evening ritual.
